The short version: the Glassline app has no accounts, no analytics and no ads. It only sends two things: the location you choose for the weather, to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute so it can show you the forecast, and feedback when you send it. Currency conversion in Search is optional and downloads a public list of exchange rates; that request carries nothing about you. Following a message you sent is optional too: Glassline then asks our site about that message, with a random code and nothing else.
What leaves your PC
- Weather. If you set a weather location, Glassline sends its coordinates (rounded to about 10 metres) to MET Norway's forecast service at api.met.no, at most every 15 minutes while Glassline runs. Like any web request, this also shows MET Norway your IP address. MET Norway's privacy policy covers what they do with it. Without a weather location, nothing is sent.
- Feedback you send. If you send feedback from Glassline Settings, we receive your message, your email address if you give one, the Glassline version, and, if you leave "Include diagnostics" on, your Windows version, screen sizes and Glassline's recent log. It is stored with Cloudflare, only read to answer you and improve Glassline, and deleted on request. So that we see it promptly, the message, your email address if you gave one and the Glassline version are also posted to a private Discord channel that only we can read; the diagnostics are not. Your IP address is not stored: only a one-way hash of it, to limit how many messages one sender can send in an hour.
- Following a message. If you switch on "Receive a follow-up" when you send feedback, our site gives that message a random code and Glassline keeps it on your PC. When Glassline starts, and when you press Refresh in Settings, Feedback, it sends the codes of your messages to our site and shows what became of each. A reply you write under a message is sent with that message's code and kept with it. Nothing else is sent, and with the switch off nothing is asked.
- Exchange rates, if you convert currencies. This part is optional. When you type a currency conversion in Search, such as 100 usd to eur, Glassline downloads the public daily exchange rates from the European Central Bank at www.ecb.europa.eu. It does this only to show you the converted amount. The request is the same for everyone: what you typed, the amount and the currencies stay on your PC. Like any web request, it shows the bank your IP address. The rates are kept on your PC and downloaded again once a week. In Settings, Search, you can make that once a day or choose Never, which keeps the rates your PC already has. You can also switch currency conversion off, there or in the setup guide, and then nothing is downloaded at all. The same is true if you never type a currency in Search.
- Calendars you subscribe to. This part is optional. If you add the address of a calendar in Settings, Control Center, Glassline downloads that calendar from the address you gave, when you add it and again about once an hour while you look at Today. If you set a reminder for a calendar, it is also downloaded a few times a day, so that a reminder knows of an event added since. Nothing but the request for the file is sent, and it goes only to that address. Like any web request, it shows that server your IP address. The address is kept in Glassline's settings on your PC, and in a backup if you make one. Without a subscribed calendar, nothing is downloaded.
- Translation languages, if you turn translation on. This part is optional and off until you turn it on. Translating is done on your PC: what you type to translate stays there. A language has to be downloaded once before it can be used. When you choose one in Settings, Search, Glassline downloads that language's files from Mozilla's storage at storage.googleapis.com, and first asks glasslineapp.com for the current list of files. Like any web request, this shows Google's storage service and us your IP address, and the files asked for show which language you chose. Nothing is downloaded until you choose a language.
- Single words, if you turn on looking them up online. This is a second switch, also off until you turn it on. With it on, when you ask for the translation of one word alone, Glassline sends that word to Wiktionary at en.wiktionary.org to look up its meanings. Like any web request, this shows Wikimedia your IP address. Phrases and sentences are never sent.
- The model for finding files by meaning, if you turn it on. This part is optional and off until you turn it on in Settings, Search. Glassline then downloads the model once (176 MB) from Hugging Face at huggingface.co. Like any web request, this shows Hugging Face your IP address. Nothing about your documents or what you type is sent, then or later: the model reads your documents and answers Search on your PC.
- Web searches you choose. When you pick the web result in Search, Glassline opens a Google search for that text in your browser. From then on it is your browser and Google at work, under their own policies.
What stays on your PC
- Settings, the apps and folders you keep in the dock, and window colours are stored in your Windows user folder.
- Search looks through your apps, settings and files on your PC, using the Windows search index or Everything, if you have it. Your queries are not sent anywhere. To put the results you open often first, Search remembers which results you opened and what you had typed, and which currencies and units you convert into, in files on your PC; turning off "Learn from what I open" in Settings deletes them.
- Finding files by meaning, when you turn it on, reads the beginning of the documents in your Documents, Desktop and Downloads folders (PDF and RTF files through what the Windows search index keeps of them) and keeps an index of what each is about in Glassline's folder on your PC. Removing the model in Settings, Search deletes it and the index.
- Place names for the weather are looked up in a list built into the app, without going online.
- Notifications, calendar events, media and system status (Wi-Fi, sound, battery) are read from Windows only to show them to you, and are never stored or sent.
- Events you add in Today are kept in a file on your PC and are not sent anywhere.
- Backups you save from Settings hold your settings, the dock, your events and what Search has learned. Each is one file, saved where you choose, and is not sent anywhere.
- Log files about Glassline's own errors stay on your PC. They are only sent if you include diagnostics with feedback.
This website
glasslineapp.com counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and does not identify you or follow you across sites: it records the page, the site you came from, your country, browser and device type, and how fast the page loaded. When you click a "Get it from Microsoft Store" button, the site also counts the click, with which button it was, the campaign name in the link (for example "website") and your country. Your IP address is not stored, only a one-way hash of it, so one visitor can't count many times. The Store link carries the same campaign name, so Microsoft can tell us how many installs came from it, as totals only.
Permissions
Windows asks you before Glassline can use your location, calendar or notifications, and Glassline only asks when you press something that needs it: "Use my location" for the weather, "Show networks" in the Wi-Fi list, or showing calendar events in Today. You can change these in Windows Settings under Privacy & security at any time.
Purchases
Glassline is sold through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft handles payment and your Microsoft account, and Glassline never sees your payment details.
Children
Glassline is not aimed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. What it receives from anyone is described above: feedback, when it is sent.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
