The taskbar
How do I get the Windows taskbar back?
Right-click the menu bar and choose Quit Glassline, or press Quit in Glassline Settings, under General. The taskbar comes back exactly as it was. If Glassline ever closes unexpectedly, it comes back on its own.
The taskbar didn't come back.
Start Glassline again, then right-click the menu bar and choose Quit Glassline: quitting puts the taskbar back. Or press the Windows key and R, type glassline --restore-taskbar and press Enter.
Is Glassline a taskbar replacement?
Yes. While Glassline runs, the Windows taskbar and Start menu are hidden, and you get a menu bar at the top, a dock at the bottom and Search on the Windows key. Quit Glassline and the taskbar and Start menu are back as they were.
Glassline didn't start when I signed in.
Open Glassline from the Start menu or Search, then right-click the menu bar, choose Glassline Settings and turn on "Start Glassline when I sign in".
How do I uninstall Glassline?
Uninstall it from Windows Settings, under Apps. The taskbar and Start menu come back on their own, even if Glassline was running.
Can I back up my setup or move it to another PC?
Yes. In Glassline Settings, under General, press Save Backup: your settings, the dock, your own events and what Search has learned go into one file. After a reinstall, or on the other PC, press Load Backup and choose that file.
Buying
How much does it cost? Is there a trial?
Glassline is a one-time purchase in the Microsoft Store: $9.99 in the United States, and the Store shows the price in your own currency. There is no subscription and no trial. The home page is a working demo of the menu bar, the dock, Search and Control Center, so you can see how it behaves before you buy.
Can I get a refund?
Microsoft sells Glassline and decides on refunds. Its rule is that apps are refunded only where the offer or the law where you live gives you that right. To ask, contact Microsoft Store support with the order from your Microsoft account's order history.
Does it work on Windows 10?
No. Glassline needs Windows 11, version 22H2 or later. The Store doesn't offer it on an older PC.
How does Glassline compare with Seelen UI, MyDockFinder or Start11?
Glassline works the moment it is installed, with no themes or configuration files, and brings a menu bar, a dock, Search, Control Center, your calendar and the weather in one app. See it side by side: Glassline as a Seelen UI alternative, Glassline as a MyDockFinder alternative, and Glassline next to the other taskbar alternatives for Windows 11, including Start11, StartAllBack, Windhawk, YASB and Cairo Desktop.
Does Glassline make Windows look like macOS?
The layout will feel familiar if you have used a Mac: a menu bar at the top that follows the app in front, a dock with magnification at the bottom, and Search in the middle of the screen. The design is Glassline's own, made for Windows 11, and Glassline has no connection to Apple.
The dock
How do I add an app to the dock?
Drag it from Search, or a program or shortcut from File Explorer, onto the dock. Or open the app, right-click its icon in the dock and choose Keep in Dock. Drag icons to change their order. To take one off, right-click it and choose Remove from Dock.
Can I keep folders and files in the dock?
Yes. Drag them from File Explorer onto the right side of the dock, next to Downloads. A folder opens as a stack, and you can drag items out of it.
Can I make the dock bigger or smaller?
Yes. In Glassline Settings, under Dock, drag Size and Icon spacing; the dock changes as you drag. Magnification sets how much icons grow under the pointer, and Automatically hide chooses when the dock slides away.
Can I change an icon in the dock?
Yes. Right-click anything in the dock and choose Change Icon, then pick a picture of yours: a PNG, an ICO, an SVG or a photo. Use Default Icon, in the same menu, brings the original back.
How do I switch between the windows of one app?
Rest the pointer on a running app in the dock and small live pictures of its windows appear. Click one to bring that window to the front. To turn the previews off or change how long they wait, see Window previews in Glassline Settings, under Dock.
The dock stays hidden when an app wants my attention.
Turn on Come out when an app asks for attention in Glassline Settings, under Dock. A hidden dock then slides in when an app has something for you, and stays until you answer it.
The menu bar and Control Center
What does a click on an app's name in the menu bar do?
It opens a panel for that app: its open windows as small pictures (click one to bring it to the front), its own volume with a mute button, the files it opened lately, Keep on Top, Open File Location and Quit. When the app stops responding, Quit becomes Force Quit. To have only the name there, switch off App panel in Glassline Settings, under Menu Bar.
How do I hide an icon in the menu bar?
Right-click it and choose Move to Control Center. It stays one click away there: click the clock, then Controls. To bring it back, right-click an empty part of the menu bar and tick it under Show in Menu Bar, or use Glassline Settings, under Menu Bar.
Where are my apps' tray icons?
In Control Center, under Other controls. To keep one in the menu bar, rest the pointer on it and click its pin. Drag the icons along the bar to put them in your own order.
Where do I see temperatures and fan speeds?
Open Control Center and choose Hardware: it shows the load of the processor, the memory and the graphics cards, with the temperatures Windows knows. Windows gives the processor's temperature and the fan speeds only to apps with a driver of their own, so Glassline reads those from HWiNFO or MSI Afterburner while one of them runs. Both are optional: turn one on in Glassline Settings, under Control Center. The free HWiNFO stops sharing its readings after 12 hours; turn Shared Memory Support on again in HWiNFO and they are back.
Can I take things out of Control Center?
Yes. Glassline Settings, under Control Center, has a switch for every module and quick switch of the Controls page, and for the calendar, Now Playing and the notifications of Today. What you switch off leaves the panel.
Search
Search doesn't find some of my files.
Without extra software, Search uses the Windows search index, which skips some folders. Install Everything (free, from voidtools.com), version 1.4 or 1.5, and turn on "Search files with Everything" in Glassline Settings to find every file on your drives as you type.
The Windows key opens the old Start menu sometimes.
That happens while an app running as administrator is in front, such as Task Manager. Windows doesn't let other apps read the keyboard then. Click any other window and the Windows key opens Search again.
What can Search work out?
Sums, such as 12 * 3.6. Units: type 10 km to miles, or an amount alone such as 5 min. Currencies: type 100 usd to eur and Search answers with the European Central Bank's rate, which is kept on your PC for when you are offline. The rates are for information only.
How do I translate in Search?
Turn on Translate in Search in Glassline Settings, under Search, and download the languages you want. Then type translate good morning to spanish and the answer shows in the list; press Enter to copy it. The translating is done on your own PC, so what you type stays there. Translation is in beta: several words together come out well, one word alone is sometimes wrong. Looking single words up online has a switch of its own, off until you turn it on; Wiktionary is then sent that word.
Calendar and weather
Can I see my Google or Outlook calendar in Glassline?
Yes, through the calendar's address. Google Calendar, Outlook, iCloud and most other calendar services can give a calendar an address that starts with https:// or webcal://. Paste it into Calendars in Glassline Settings, under Control Center, and its events appear in Today next to your own. Each calendar can have its own colour, name and reminder. To change one of its events, use the calendar's own app.
How do I set the weather location?
In Glassline Settings, under Weather, type a town and press Find, or press "Use my location". To hide the weather, press Remove next to the place.
Displays, games and reading
Does it work with more than one display?
Yes. Each display gets its own menu bar, in the colour of the app maximized on it; the bar on the display you aren't using is dimmed. The dock is on the display you are using, in that display's colours: click anywhere on another display and it comes there. It hides only for windows on its own display. Search and Settings open on the display you are working on. To keep the menu bar on your main display only, turn off Show on every display in Glassline Settings, under Menu Bar.
What happens when I play a game?
While a game on your list is maximized or fills the display, the menu bar and the dock leave that display and the game gets the room they kept free. Glassline never moves a game's window, and when you switch to another app everything is back. A game in a small window changes nothing. Anything else that fills the screen, like a video, also makes them step out of the way. The setting is Step aside for games, in Glassline Settings, under Games. The games Windows knows are listed by themselves, and one started from Steam, Epic, Xbox or another launcher joins the list the first time it runs. To add another game or any program, press Add... under Add a game or an app; the switch beside a game leaves it out.
Can I make Glassline easier to read or calmer?
Glassline Settings has an Accessibility page: Follow Windows' text size makes Glassline grow with the text size you set in Windows, Follow Windows' contrast themes draws it in the solid colours of the contrast theme that is on in Windows, and Reduce transparency gives almost solid glass. Under Appearance, Interface size makes everything larger or smaller on each display, and Motion set to Instant makes things appear without moving. Every option in Settings has a question mark that explains it in plain words, and Narrator reads the menu bar, the dock and Settings.
